Feminisms and Religious Thought

This workshop explores topics at the intersections of feminism, logic, and religion. It provides a space to center religious thought and critique by scholars who are underrepresented due to their gender and/or sexual identities, as well as the marginalized nature of their work. This brings to the forefront the way different methodological and foundational starting points shape our systems of reasoning and belief.

Liberatory and feminist critiques of religion have exposed how major religious frameworks frequently naturalize patriarchal structures, exclusive language, and gendered hierarchies of knowledge. Importantly, feminist work has actively reshaped religious discourse from within, reinterpreting texts, recovering marginalized voices, and proposing new models of the divine that center relationality, embodiment, and liberation.

Topics may include, but are not restricted to:

• Feminist epistemologies that challenge or expand classical theological and metaphysical models.
• Topics at the intersections of feminist religious thought and social, political, or ecological issues. This can engage with frameworks such as ecofeminism, technofeminism, and feminist critiques of war.
• Intersectional and decolonial feminist perspectives on religious texts and/or practices.
• The logical reconstruction or subversion of traditionally patriarchal religious concepts.
• How the centering of embodiment, affect, and lived experience in feminist thought disrupts traditional, abstract philosophical theology.
• How specific religious traditions (e.g., Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, Christian) uniquely shape, resist, or generate their own internal feminist critiques.

Submitted abstracts should be concise, clearly articulating the core arguments and frameworks for either a paper or poster presentation. Submit here.
